The “controversial” 2011 movie Zack Snyder will never forgive himself for: “That’s my only regret”

Far Out ·

Zack Snyder has continued to reflect on Sucker Punch, his divisive 2011 original film, which he originally envisioned as a far darker, R-rated project before it was softened to secure a PG-13 rating and extra budget. The film, starring Emily Browning as an institutionalised woman navigating a blurred fantasy world, was both a critical and commercial disappointment, with reviewers criticising its thin characters, weak plot and sexualised portrayal of its female cast, despite the story's supposed empowerment themes.

Speaking to Metro in 2023, Snyder said his original, "super dark" vision would have been "super controversial," while his wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder admitted the decision to tone the film down for a wider rating was her biggest regret, as they hadn't worked out how to make the R-rated version fit the budget. Zack Snyder has said a director's cut exists but has never been released, though given the finished film's fundamental flaws in plot and characterisation, a more explicit version would likely not have significantly improved its reception.
