The Cure’s Bassist Was Too Ill to Perform in Berlin, Son Stepped In, Band Announces
The Cure have announced that their long-serving bassist Simon Gallup temporarily stepped away from the band's European tour after falling ill shortly before a concert in Berlin on 10th July. His son, Eden Gallup, who was already part of the touring line-up, took over bass duties to allow the show to go ahead and has continued to fill in at subsequent Berlin dates. The band did not disclose the nature of the illness but described Simon's absence in reassuring terms, asking fans to wish him "the speediest of recoveries".
According to the band's social media post, Simon was "still not well enough to play" for the second of three Berlin nights and has also been ruled out of the third, with no firm date given for his return. Gallup, 66, is a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee who has played with The Cure since 1979, aside from a couple of breaks. Eden had joined the touring line-up the previous month, replacing Perry Bamonte, who died in December 2025 after a short illness. The Cure are touring Europe following a return to live performance at Primavera Sound after a two-year absence, and won their first Grammy this year.
