He made the boast to Mojo magazine in 2016, joking "Top that, motherfucker!" about the achievement, which underlines his standing as one of the most in-demand and well-connected guitarists of his generation.

The Who connection came in 1996, when Gilmour joined the band for a Prince's Trust benefit performance of Quadrophenia in Hyde Park, playing on 'The Dirty Jobs' and 'Love, Reign O'er Me' and taking lead vocals on the former. The Beatles link is more indirect, resting on his relationship with Paul McCartney, whom he met during the Dark Side of the Moon sessions in 1972 and later joined on stage at Liverpool's Cavern Club in December 1999, where the pair performed 'I Saw Her Standing There' together, with Gilmour taking on John Lennon's vocal part.
