Vogue editor Anna Wintour is facing renewed controversy over next year's Met Gala after her choice of British designer John Galliano as the 2027 event's centrepiece backfired. Galliano, once celebrated at Dior but fired and ostracised in 2011 for an antisemitic and racist tirade, withdrew from the role on 31 August following pressure from Jewish groups, Met donors and New York politicians, just months after Wintour had promised a scaled-back, less controversial event following backlash at last May's gala.

The situation is complicated further by Galliano's current role at fast-fashion retailer Zara, which fashion sources say had been lined up as a financial sponsor for the 2027 gala, though nothing has been officially confirmed. Suspicions were fuelled by a lengthy six-page profile of Zara chair Marta Ortega Pérez in Vogue's September issue. With Galliano now out of the picture, it is unclear whether Zara will remain involved, and the Met has said only that sponsorship and other plans "will be announced at a later date."
