Tom Cruise's 2015 action film American Made was linked to a fatal plane crash during filming in the Colombian Andes, which killed two of three pilots aboard a small aircraft used for the production. The incident, which also left a third pilot paralysed, later drew legal action from the victims' families and highlighted concerns that safety was compromised in the pursuit of increasingly ambitious aerial stunts.

Pilots Alan Purwin and Carlos Berl died in the crash, while Jimmy Lee Garland was left paralysed from the waist down. Families sued the film's producers—Imagine Entertainment, Vendian Entertainment and Cross Creek Pictures—alleging the plane was allowed to fly in poor weather, and further litigation followed between the families and the production's insurer. Although Cruise and director Doug Liman were not formally named in the lawsuits, a leaked complaint from an executive producer accused them of "adding entire scenes and aerial shots on the fly," while Purwin himself had reportedly called the project "the most dangerous" he had ever worked on. The film went on to earn strong box office returns and critical praise for Cruise upon its 2017 release.
