The ‘father of Master Chief’ doesn’t like the new Halo’s new halos
Marcus Lehto, the original Halo art director often described as the “father of Master Chief”, has criticised the redesigned Halo ringworlds in Halo: Campaign Evolved, despite otherwise enjoying the remake. His comments matter because they add a prominent original creator’s perspective to the debate over whether modernising Halo has preserved the scale, mystery and visual identity of the 2001 game.
Lehto said the remake’s upgraded movement, lighting, combat feel and many visuals work well, and he completed it on Heroic difficulty. However, he objected to the ring’s more detailed outer design, arguing that prominent features make the vast structure appear smaller; the original’s tiny lights and simpler silhouette better conveyed its immense scale. He also described some expanded cinematics as “cringe”, while stressing that the game remains fun overall.
- Lehto likes the remake overall but dislikes its redesigned Halo rings.
- He says added detail weakens the ringworlds’ sense of scale.
- Some new cinematic additions also drew criticism.
