The “greatest gift” Stevie Nicks keeps with her everywhere
Stevie Nicks has revealed that a piece of jewellery given to her by Tom Petty remains one of her most treasured possessions, reflecting the close personal and professional bond the pair shared outside her work with Fleetwood Mac. After becoming a prominent guest contributor to Petty and the Heartbreakers' recordings, Nicks was eventually made an honorary member of the band, a gesture she has described as one of the most meaningful of her career.
Nicks recalled performing 27 shows with Petty and the Heartbreakers in 2006, after which Petty presented her with a platinum sheriff's badge featuring 24-carat gold and diamonds, inscribed "To Our Honorary Heartbreaker, Stevie Nicks" on the front and "To the Only Girl in Our Band" on the back. She said she keeps it attached to her black velvet top hat and wears it everywhere, calling it perhaps the most beautiful piece of jewellery she has ever received. The pair's friendship, forged partly through Nicks's backing vocals on tracks such as "Insider" and "Don't Come Around Here No More," saw her regarded as a supportive presence for Petty, including during the making of his album Echo amid his divorce.
