The murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts nurse who strangled her three young children in January 2023, ended in a mistrial after a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict on whether she was criminally responsible or suffering from postpartum psychosis. The case, dubbed "America's saddest trial", divided public opinion, drawing daily protests from supporters and raising over $1 million in donations, while inviting comparison with a strikingly similar Irish case that was resolved very differently.

In 2020, Irish paediatric nurse Deirdre Morley smothered her three children at their home in County Dublin on 24 January, exactly three years to the day before Clancy killed her children in a similar manner. Both mothers had documented mental health histories and attempted suicide afterwards, and both sets of children were found by their fathers. Unlike Clancy's contentious trial, Morley's case saw prosecution and defence experts unanimously agree she was legally insane at the time, and she was acquitted on all counts by reason of insanity, being committed to Dublin's Central Mental Hospital rather than facing continued prosecution.
