Peter Green invited Mick Fleetwood to join his band in 1967 partly because Fleetwood was devastated after separating from Jenny Boyd, rather than solely for his musical ability. The account highlights how personal relationships and friendship shaped Fleetwood Mac from its earliest days, long before the band’s better-known turmoil during the making of Rumours.

Fleetwood said Green revealed the reason during interviews for Fleetwood’s book Love That Burns, explaining that he wanted to help him recover and “get back on [his] feet”. Green named the group Fleetwood Mac after Fleetwood and bassist John McVie so it could continue without him; he left in 1970 after struggles with addiction and mental health. Fleetwood and Boyd married in June 1970, later divorcing, remarrying and divorcing again.
