Ministers are considering using Fort Blockhouse in Gosport as a reception and processing centre for migrants arriving by small boat, close to the planned expansion of Haslar Immigration Removal Centre. The proposal has prompted criticism from residents, local leaders and Gosport’s MP, who fear it could increase tensions, encourage further crossings and make the town a focal point for the migration debate.

The plans follow a recent shift in smuggling routes from Kent towards Hampshire, despite the journey from Normandy being longer and more dangerous. Protests erupted in Gosport when migrants were expected to arrive, resulting in six arrests and police escorts for coaches; Haslar is due to reopen with capacity for about 600 foreign criminals and migrants. Local officials have also highlighted previous demonstrations and abuse directed at lifeboat volunteers, while the Government has not yet confirmed that Fort Blockhouse will be used.
