The Linda Lindas on “really fun” new album ‘Gotta Get Out’ and “cool” Hayley Williams collab ‘Closer’: “It’s an emo song about not wanting to get older”

Los Angeles punk band The Linda Lindas have spoken to NME about their forthcoming third album, 'Gotta Get Out', due for release on 28 August, and shared 'Closer', a new emo-leaning single featuring longtime supporter Hayley Williams of Paramore. Although Williams has championed the group for years — praising them in interviews, joining them onstage and appearing alongside guitarist Eloise Wong at a recent tour date — 'Closer' marks the first time the two acts have worked together in the studio. The band describe the record as experimental and joyful, predicting it will "shock people".

According to the band, 'Closer' is about the anxiety of growing older and childhood ending, with member Lucia de la Garza noting the "generational" quality of pairing their youth with Williams's own "emo era" from nearly two decades ago. The single is the second to be released from the album, following the pop-punk track 'Burning Out', and the record follows 2024's 'No Obligation', which arrived after the four-piece supported Paramore and Green Day on major US tours. In the wider interview the band also cite Fontaines D.C. and The Cure as influences, credit encouragement from musicians such as Karen O and Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino, and praise fellow admirer Olivia Rodrigo.
