The mishap-strewn warfare of Worms: Galactic Tactics gives hope it’s not just a comedy XCOM
Worms: Galactic Tactics, a new turn-based tactics game in the long-running Worms series, is due in 2027 from developer Absolutely Games and publisher Team17. Having played early sessions at Gamescom, the previewer found it a promising and distinctly "Wormsy" take on the crowded XCOM-style genre, despite departing from several series conventions such as 2D visuals and free-for-all multiplayer focus.
The game features 3D visuals, a singleplayer-focused roguelike campaign following three named worms through a televised tournament, and classic weapons like Holy Hand Grenades and Concrete Donkeys reworked as unlockable upgrades earned across runs. Aiming now involves manually pointing weapons and completing a timing-based minigame for accuracy, preserving skill while allowing for comic mishaps, and height advantage and destructible terrain remain central to tactics. Full online and local multiplayer modes are also planned, though the previewer wants to see more of how these work before final judgement.
