As autumn approaches, museums and galleries across the UK are launching a run of major exhibitions covering royal history, Renaissance art, Japanese printmaking and British landscape painting. The season is headlined by the Bayeux Tapestry's return to England for the first time since it was embroidered in Canterbury almost 1,000 years ago, alongside shows exploring Queen Elizabeth II's wardrobe and Jan van Eyck's portraiture.
– Bayeux Tapestry, British Museum (September 2026–July 2027): the medieval artefact depicting the Battle of Hastings returns to England; tickets have already sold out, with a mailing list open for future releases.
– British Landscapes: A Sense of Place, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester (until 1 November 2026): British landscape art from Thomas Gainsborough to Barbara Hepworth.
