The Dutch central bank (DNB) has relocated 86 tonnes of its gold reserves from the United States and Canada to London, citing "increasing geopolitical unrest" and a desire to strengthen crisis preparedness. The move follows warnings from Dutch financial figures that gold held in America is "no longer safe" given the unpredictability of President Donald Trump, with concerns raised that the US could refuse to return the reserves, impose tariffs, or delay repayment. DNB President Olaf Sleijpen said the bank does not expect to ever need to deploy the gold but wants to be prepared regardless, and stressed that shifting reserves to London would make them easier to trade quickly in an emergency.

The Netherlands' total gold stock stood at 612.4 tonnes, valued at €72.2 billion at the end of 2025. Before the transfer, 31.3% was held in New York and 19.7% in Ottawa; both now hold 18.5% each, while London's share has risen from 18.1% to 32.1%, making it the largest single location for Dutch gold, with 30.8% remaining in the Netherlands itself. The transfer combined buying and selling of gold with the physical movement of over 27 tonnes via Zeist to London, a method DNB said spread the risks of moving such a large quantity of bullion.
