Friend has released a second version of its AI companion pendant, adding a speaker so it can reply aloud rather than only by text message. The update matters because it makes the always-listening wearable a more direct conversational device, while reviving concerns about AI companionship, privacy and technology replacing human contact.

The pendant costs $249, up from $129 for the original model, with an optional $10 monthly subscription for memory beyond 30 days. Each device has a pre-assigned voice and personality that cannot be changed, uses OpenAI’s latest models, and follows a controversial advertising campaign that drew protests in several cities.
