The New ‘Wildwood’ Trailer Shows a Mix of Coraline’s Style With a Haunting Fairy Tale

Polygon · 3 hours ago

Laika, the stop-motion animation studio behind Coraline, has released a new trailer for its upcoming film Wildwood, revealing a dark fairy tale that draws heavily on the visual style of its 2009 breakthrough alongside echoes of Jim Henson's Labyrinth. The trailer, set to a slowed-down cover of Avicii's "Wake Me Up", introduces Alexandra (voiced by Carey Mulligan), the ruler of an enchanted forest near Portland who, grieving the loss of her own son, sends a murder of crows to snatch a baby from a city playground. The story centres on young heroine Prue McKeel confronting a tyrannical mother figure, a thematic thread that mirrors Coraline as well as elements of Pan's Labyrinth.

In the film, Prue (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) ventures into the woods with classmate Curtis Mehlberg (Jacob Tremblay) to rescue her brother Mac from Alexandra and her wolf army, with Prue gaining allies and riding a giant eagle while Curtis ends up captured and caged. Wildwood is directed by Travis Knight and written by Chris Butler, the pair behind 2016's Kubo and the Two Strings, and boasts a cast including Mahershala Ali, Awkwafina, Angela Bassett and Charlie Day. The film is due for release on 23 October through Fathom Entertainment.
