‘The Odyssey’ Beats ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to Become Biggest R-Rated Movie Ever
Christopher Nolan's mythological epic "The Odyssey" has overtaken "Deadpool & Wolverine" to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, with Universal Pictures confirming the milestone on Thursday. The achievement caps a remarkable run for the film since its July 2026 release, and it has also become Nolan's highest-grossing movie globally, as well as the top-grossing release of Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson's careers.
The Odyssey has taken $1.352 billion worldwide, edging past the $1.338 billion earned by Disney's Deadpool & Wolverine, and its domestic total now stands at $516.3 million. Shot entirely on Imax film cameras, it previously set a record as the highest-grossing Imax release ever, and it recently surpassed The Dark Knight Rises as Nolan's biggest global hit. Ryan Reynolds publicly congratulated the film on social media, referencing his character's Honda Odyssey minivan fight scene from Deadpool & Wolverine. The wider 2026 summer box office has also performed strongly, taking $4.24 billion domestically so far, 23.7% ahead of last year, though still short of 2013's all-time summer record of $4.75 billion.
