US medical drama The Pitt and comedy Hacks have topped the nominations for the 78th Emmy Awards, America's most coveted television honours, with 25 and 24 nods respectively. The announcement drew attention as much for its omissions as its front-runners, with the final seasons of the hit shows Stranger Things and Euphoria both missing out on the best drama shortlist, underlining how competitive this year's field has proved.

British performers featured prominently, led by Matthew Rhys, the only person nominated for two lead acting awards (for Widow's Bay and The Beast In Me), alongside Riz Ahmed, Carey Mulligan, Gary Oldman and Rufus Sewell. Stranger Things managed seven nominations, all in technical categories, while Zendaya was the sole member of Euphoria's cast recognised in the main acting races. The Bear reached the best comedy shortlist, though its star Jeremy Allen White was overlooked despite winning lead comedy actor in both 2024 and 2025. Behind the two leaders, Widow's Bay took 19 nominations, Pluribus 18 and Beef 16, with the winners to be announced in Los Angeles on 14 September.
