Grime MC Jammz reflects on how appearing in Debris Stevenson's play Poet in da Corner in 2018 changed the course of his career, taking him from music into theatre. He describes how what began as helping write a song for the production led to an unexpected acting role at the Royal Court, after artistic director Vicky Featherstone was impressed by his reading and invited him into rehearsals, an experience that reshaped his sense of what MCing skills could offer beyond the club scene.

The play, a loose autobiography of Stevenson's difficult childhood shaped by dyslexia and a strict religious upbringing, was transformed by her discovery of Dizzee Rascal's album Boy in da Corner, with Jammz playing pirate radio DJ SS Vyper, a childhood friend whose life took a different path. Jammz says the production affirmed grime as a genuine art form despite the genre once being effectively banned from clubs, and it launched his ongoing theatre career: he was later commissioned by the Royal Court to write his own play, has written Blaze FM (now touring for a third time), and currently provides music for for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf at London's Yard theatre, running until 17 October.
