Hulu is developing a drama series based on "The Poison Daughter," a self-published dark enemies-to-lovers romantasy novel by Sheila Masterson, with the author set to executive produce alongside 20th Television as studio. The project, currently seeking a writer, adds to a wave of romantasy adaptations as streamers compete for the genre's growing audience, following similar moves by Prime Video (Rebecca Yarros's Fourth Wing) and Sony (Jennifer L. Armentrout's From Blood and Ash).

The novel follows Harlow Carrenwell, whose fatal kiss is used as a weapon by her magical family until she encounters a man who survives it — her own betrothed, Henry Havenwood — exposing her secret double life. Self-published in October 2025, the book sold more than 250,000 copies and made the USA Today Bestseller list three times before Slowburn acquired it in April 2026; it publishes in hardcover and audiobook in the US and UK on 18 August 2026 and will be translated into 20 languages. It joins a growing list of self-published titles turned screen hits, such as "The Martian," "Silo" and "Fifty Shades of Grey," though Hulu's earlier attempt to adapt Sarah J. Maas's "A Court of Thorns and Roses" ultimately stalled.
