The showrunners of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power say its third season will begin after a five-year jump in the story, intended to inject fresh momentum into the series. They believe the change will let the narrative move into a more consequential stage of Middle-earth’s Second Age, as Sauron’s power grows and conflicts escalate.

The time jump follows the events of season two, which saw Sauron advance his plans through the Rings of Power and build towards open war. Showrunner Patrick McKay described the shift as a “jolt of adrenaline”, suggesting it will show the effects of major developments rather than immediately continuing from the previous finale.
