## Key points

- The Band helped bring American roots music into rock.
- George Harrison admired the lasting appeal of their albums.
- Elton John said their music influenced his own work.

## Summary

The article argues that The Band’s influence on rock has endured, even though the group is less recognised by some mainstream listeners. By combining American roots music with rock, they helped shape a distinctive sound and moved from backing other musicians to becoming celebrated performers in their own right.

George Harrison praised the varied voices and lasting appeal of their albums, while Elton John said The Band’s soulful, laid-back take on Americana changed his life and influenced albums he made with Bernie Taupin. The article presents their praise as evidence of the group’s broad impact, and points readers to their farewell concert film, *The Last Waltz*.
