ABC's police procedural "The Rookie" will introduce a new rookie officer to the LAPD's Mid-Wilshire Division when it returns for Season 9 next year, continuing the show's practice of cycling fresh trainees through its central premise. Series creator Alexi Hawley confirmed the addition, saying at least one rookie character is essential to the drama's format, and suggested future seasons could rotate multiple rookies rather than following a single trainee's arc, as has been the show's pattern so far.

The change follows the Season 8 finale, which closed out Miles Penn's (Deric Augustine) storyline without him formally graduating on screen, following earlier rookie Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez). Nathan Fillion's John Nolan, the show's original rookie across its 144-episode run, will remain the series' central character despite no longer being a trainee himself, with the newcomer joining as Season 9 is already in production ahead of its 2027 return.
