Rather than heading to traditionally popular cities like Austin or Dallas, nearly 11,000 young people born between 1997 and 2012 relocated to San Antonio, signalling a shift in where younger generations prefer to establish themselves. The trend reflects a broader pattern of Gen Z prioritising career opportunities and affordable living over major cross-country moves, with the city's combination of economic accessibility and lifestyle appeal proving decisive.

San Antonio's appeal stems from its affordability—lower costs for groceries, utilities and housing—alongside robust career prospects and cultural attractions including the River Walk, universities and a vibrant Tex-Mex scene. Washington DC ranked second nationally for Gen Z migration with approximately 9,000 young adults, followed by Austin, Nashville and Dallas. The data reveals a generational divide: whilst Gen Z prioritises cities with strong entry-level career opportunities and social infrastructure, millennials favour locations offering housing affordability and the ability to purchase homes. Gen Z residents are simultaneously leaving high-cost cities like New York and Los Angeles in increased numbers, whilst Washington DC paradoxically repels established millennials despite attracting younger adults for early-career prospects.
