## Key points

- Hanks and Damon both admire Robert Duvall.
- Damon modelled his career choices on Duvall.
- Duvall appeared in films for over six decades.

## Summary

Tom Hanks and Matt Damon have both named Robert Duvall as their favourite actor, praising his convincing performances and the career choices he represents. Their shared admiration highlights an actor who has appeared in many landmark films over more than six decades, despite receiving less attention in discussions of the greatest performers.

Hanks said he would pay to watch Duvall simply walk across a street, while Damon has said he wants a career like his. Damon particularly drew inspiration from Duvall’s brief appearance in *Bullitt* when deciding which roles to accept. Hanks and Damon worked together in *Saving Private Ryan*, released in 1998.
