## Key points

- Peltola’s missed votes have become a campaign issue.
- Records show she missed over 17 per cent of congressional votes.
- Her team cites maternity leave and two family deaths in 2023.

## Summary

Mary Peltola, the Democratic candidate challenging Alaska Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, has faced criticism from Sullivan and Donald Trump for missing votes and meetings while in public office. The story links her absences to maternity leave and personal losses, including the deaths of her mother and husband in 2023, while her team says Republicans are using family tragedy for political gain.

Records cited in the article show Peltola missed more than 18 per cent of votes in the Alaska House from 1999 to 2009, over 36 per cent of Bethel City Council meetings from 2011 to 2013, and more than 17 per cent of 1,370 congressional votes between 2022 and 2024. Her husband, Eugene Peltola Jr, died after a plane crash in remote western Alaska less than four months after her mother’s death. A former colleague described the period as devastating and said her family life had been deeply disrupted.
