Charlize Maree Zmuda, a 17-year-old competent swimmer and volunteer lifeguard, was fatally attacked by a bull shark whilst swimming at an unpatrolled beach at Woorim on Bribie Island, Queensland in February 2025. Eighteen months after the tragedy, a coroner's report has provided closure to her family, revealing that the attack was so rapid that her death was instantaneous—occurring before her friend could raise an alarm. The coroner ruled that Charlize died from an air embolism caused by a shark bite to her upper arm that blocked her arteries, a rapidly fatal injury. Her parents, Steve and Renee, say they are relieved to learn she did not suffer, though they continue to urge Australians not to fear the ocean.

The coroner found that appropriate safety measures were in place at the beach, including 18 operational drumlines positioned 300–350 metres offshore that had been serviced two days before the incident. Shark nets were deemed unsuitable due to high tidal currents that would render them ineffective. The coroner's report noted that only four sharks, including two bull sharks, had been caught in the drumlines between January 2024 and March 2025, emphasising that such measures do not provide complete protection. No inquest will be held, as the safety framework was deemed adequate, though the shark control programme underwent substantial reform and investment following Charlize's death.
