The Weeknd debuted an unreleased song, reportedly titled “Tokyo”, during his After Hours Til Dawn tour in Saitama, Japan. The track samples “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis”, the iconic opening theme from Neon Genesis Evangelion, and featured the song’s original singer, Yoko Takahashi, making the performance a notable collaboration between Western pop, Japanese music and anime culture.

Takahashi performed the original song in full while The Weeknd watched, with visuals directed by Yoko Taro, the creative director of the NieR video-game series, combining imagery from Evangelion and NieR: Automata. The debut follows a similar city-specific premiere in Rio de Janeiro and is significant because The Weeknd had suggested that 2025’s Hurry Up Tomorrow could be his final album under the name; he has also achieved five US No. 1 albums and six Hot 100 No. 1 singles.
