The World Cup final came to town. The town grew 8 times larger.
East Rutherford, New Jersey, temporarily became the centre of the football world as it hosted the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. The event placed extraordinary demands on a borough normally far smaller than the crowds arriving for the match, highlighting the logistical and security pressures faced by small host communities during major sporting events.
The town’s population of roughly 10,000 was expected to swell by around eight times as tens of thousands of supporters, staff and visitors converged on the stadium. Mayor Jeffrey Lahullier was responsible for overseeing the local response, alongside wider regional arrangements, for a final held at the 82,500-capacity venue on 19 July.
