X has added a built-in video editor and recorder to its iOS app in a bid to encourage users to post more original video content rather than reposting clips from elsewhere. The move is the latest sign that the platform, formerly Twitter, is trying to compete directly with video-centric rivals such as TikTok.

According to Nikita Bier, X's head of product, the new tool offers long-awaited features including overlay captions in multiple languages with customisable styling, and a green screen option that lets users add custom backgrounds from posts or their camera roll. Bier said rewarding original creators is a top priority and promised further updates in the coming weeks. The feature is expected to reach Android, which X is currently rebuilding. It follows other recent video pushes, including a video reaction function and $1 million set aside for live streamer payouts. More original content may also help train X's Grok AI, which learns from public posts on the platform.
