X-Men: The Animated Series producer Larry Houston has revealed that the beloved 1990s cartoon nearly collapsed before it aired, after an early recording of the show failed to work and had to be scrapped entirely. Speaking on a panel at FAN EXPO Canada moderated by Collider, Houston explained that the original cast was recast because the team wanted trained theatrical actors capable of real emotional depth, rather than stereotypical "cartoon voices". The revelation matters given the character's enduring legacy, particularly as X-Men '97, the Disney+ sequel series, has just finished its second season and is directly linked to the original show.

Houston credited the eventual cast, including Chris Potter as Gambit, Cedric Smith as Professor X and Randall Carpenter as Mystique, with shaping how these characters have been portrayed for over three decades. Several original stars, such as Lenore Zann (Rogue), Cal Dodd (Wolverine) and George Buza (Beast), reprised their roles for X-Men '97, while others were recast. The panel took place amid a wider surge in X-Men projects, including the animated series' upcoming third season, a live-action appearance in Avengers: Doomsday, a new film reboot starring Sadie Sink, and Insomniac's forthcoming Wolverine video game.
