Theo Bleak – “We Will Not Be Lovers” (The Waterboys Cover)
Scottish musician Theo Bleak has released a new cover of The Waterboys' "We Will Not Be Lovers", a track originally featured on the band's 1988 album Fisherman's Blues. The release follows her December project Bargaining, which Stereogum named an Album Of The Week, and pays tribute to fellow Scot Mike Scott, the Waterboys' Edinburgh-born frontman.
Bleak's rendition is described as slower and sparser than the original, with a melancholic, faintly haunted quality carried by her vocals. The cover is accompanied by a video directed by Jacob Gandy. Explaining her approach, Bleak said she adored the song's "urgency, chaos and flippancy", associating its sound with a summer night on the east coast of Scotland, and aimed to preserve its "longing despondency" while making it feel both lonely and excited.
