## Key points

- Voters delivered a sweeping rejection of Maga.
- Diverse candidates won key races across several states.
- The result renewed some Americans’ faith in decency.

## Summary

In a sweeping US election, voters turned away from Maga and elected candidates the writer sees as representing decency, diversity and potential reform. The result matters because it challenges the idea that cruelty and corruption have become defining features of American politics.

Victors included a Black woman elected governor of Georgia, a gay senator in New Hampshire, a Muslim senator in Ohio and a Native American woman elected governor of New Mexico. Texas also turned blue, with Gina Hinojosa set to become its first Latina governor and James Talarico its youngest senator; voters also commemorated people killed by federal agents.
