France has successfully developed prototype deep-sea drones capable of descending to 6,000 metres, filling a critical gap in global ocean monitoring. This matters because the existing Argo Program floats only reach 2,000–4,000 metres, missing 10 per cent of ocean warming that occurs in deeper waters—an increasingly urgent blind spot as climate change alters ocean conditions.

Ifremer's Deep-6000 prototypes completed five successful dives between January and February, making France the third country after China and the US to achieve this capability. By 2028, approximately 30 new deep-sea floats will join the international fleet of 4,000 existing devices, potentially enabling researchers to explore more than 98 per cent of the ocean. The floats withstand extreme pressure (600 times greater than sea level at 6,000 metres) using composite hulls and operate on ten-day cycles, collecting data on temperature, salinity, oxygen and pressure to improve climate forecasts and ocean circulation models.
