They survived 9/11; 25 years later, their bonds remain unbroken

National Geographic has released a new three-part documentary series, 9/11: Reunited, made in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial and Museum to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. Rather than simply retelling the events of the day, the series reunites survivors whose lives intersected during the attacks, focusing on the friendships and bonds they formed rather than the horror itself. Director Julian Jones, who previously worked on the Emmy-winning 2021 series 9/11: One Day in America, said the aim was to highlight the selflessness and everyday heroism shown that day, and to explore what survivors call "9/12" — the long psychological and physical aftermath.

The series draws on extensive archival footage but deliberately omits some of the most disturbing imagery, such as footage of people jumping from the burning North Tower, in order to remain sensitive to victims' families. Jones said the production team let survivors' stories emerge organically rather than imposing a narrative, allowing participants to ask unanswered questions and pay tribute to lost colleagues. Featured survivors include John Paczkowski and George Phoenix, office workers from the North Tower, and Jan Demczur, a janitor who joined them in an elevator on the morning of the attacks.
