## Key points

- Barry’s hat-trick inspired Everton’s comprehensive cup win at Preston.
- Everton dominated despite questions over their cup ambitions.
- Barry has scored four goals in two games this season.

## Summary

Everton swept aside Preston North End in the Carabao Cup as Thierno Barry scored a hat-trick and set up Brennan Johnson. The emphatic result gives David Moyes an early-season attacking boost, while also answering questions over Everton’s commitment to the cup competition through a strong team selection and dominant display.

Barry opened the scoring from Vitalii Mykolenko’s cross after fine work by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, then added two close-range finishes after half-time. Johnson completed the scoring after Barry’s through-ball, while Everton had started almost the same side that beat Crystal Palace; Barry now has four goals in two matches this season, after scoring eight in his debut campaign.
