‘Things are going to get messy’ Murdered wife’s chilling voice notes sent days before she was raped and suffocated by her controlling estranged husband
Michael Thompson has been convicted of the rape and murder of his estranged wife, Kimberley Thompson, a 43-year-old civil servant and award-winning basketball coach, following a six-week trial. The "coercive and controlling" IT expert attacked her in the middle of the night at their marital home in Northampton in August 2025, while the couple were sleeping in separate bedrooms during the final stages of their divorce. He was also convicted of two counts of perverting the course of justice after attempting to stage her death as a suicide. The case matters as a stark illustration of domestic abuse and coercive control turning fatal.
Police have released evidence from the case, including Thompson's police interview, his 999 call staging the death, and voice notes Kimberley sent to a friend days beforehand, in which she warned "things are going to get messy" and expressed fear that he would react violently. Further evidence included audio of Kimberley discovering Thompson's phone in her car, apparently planted to spy on her. Thompson, a former amateur boxer, had almost evaded justice after police initially accepted his account that Kimberley had overdosed on pills and spirits following consensual sex. He mouthed "wow" as the verdict was delivered.
