A third person in the Frankfurt area has died from malaria despite not having travelled to a malaria-endemic region or worked at Frankfurt Airport. Health officials believe an infected Anopheles mosquito was transported on an aircraft from abroad, causing a rare outbreak and raising concerns about delayed diagnosis in a region where malaria is not normally transmitted.

Two airport workers died in August, while six employees were reportedly infected and additional cases were identified in Schwanheim. Authorities have placed mosquito traps around the airport; symptoms can include fever, sweating, chills, headaches, stomach pain and muscle aches, but early treatment usually leads to recovery.
