This 2023 Fantasy Video Game Proves Disney Adaptations Are Playing It Too Safe
Lies of P is presented as an unusually bold and atmospheric adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, contrasting with the safer approach associated with Disney’s well-known 1940 film and later versions. The 2023 game reimagines the morality tale as a dark, tragic action role-playing game, using its setting and mechanics to explore lying, mercy and what it means to become human.
Developed by South Korean studios Neowiz and Round8, the game takes place in the Belle Époque-inspired city of Krat after a puppet uprising and amid a deadly Petrification Disease. Players control P, a human-looking puppet able to lie and kill, as he searches for Geppetto with guidance from Sophia and Gemini; its Soulslike combat includes customisable prosthetic-arm weapons and a hidden humanity system, with high humanity unlocking a secret ending.
- Lies of P transforms Pinocchio into a dark, inventive Soulslike RPG.
- Its choices make lying and compassion central to gameplay.
- Krat’s disasters give the fairy tale a grim new context.
