## Summary

Wes Craven’s 1996 film *Scream* is remembered for its self-aware slasher story, and its alternative and indie rock soundtrack helps establish both the setting and the suspense. The article argues that the music works because it reflects ordinary teenage life while adding an unsettling edge.

It examines five songs and how they fit their scenes, including Catherine’s “Whisper”, which plays as students discuss a classmate’s murder, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ “Red Right Hand”, used as a recurring warning across the franchise. The text also highlights Birdbrain’s “Youth of America”, whose music video used footage from the film; it notes the song became the band’s best-known achievement.
