Vince Gill’s 1995 compilation album Souvenirs is presented as having coincidentally anticipated two later developments in his life: his eventual role with the Eagles and the end of his first marriage. The article argues that tracks and imagery which seemed routine at the time gained retrospective significance years later.

The album included Gill’s cover of the Eagles’ “I Can’t Tell You Why”; decades later, he joined the band as guitarist following Glenn Frey’s death. Its track “Tryin’ To Get Over You” featured Gill and then-wife Janis Gill portrayed as separated in its video, before their divorce in 1997; he married Amy Grant in 2000. Released in November 1995, Souvenirs reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and No. 11 on the Billboard 200.
