A week after a catastrophic flash flood swept through the Nepal-Tibet border region, thousands of people remain unaccounted for as rescuers shift from search-and-rescue towards recovery efforts. The disaster, believed to have been triggered by a glacial collapse, destroyed villages in a Himalayan valley, and concerns are growing that the confirmed death toll will continue to rise as access to remote areas improves.

Nepal's disaster agency reports at least 1,114 deaths and nearly 4,000 people still missing, while Chinese state media puts the Tibetan side's toll at 16 dead and over 500 unaccounted for, though information from the tightly controlled region remains limited. Nearly 12,000 people have been rescued so far, but hundreds of foreign nationals, including Britons, remain missing, alongside workers believed trapped in hydroelectric tunnels. With more than 40 bridges destroyed, rescuers are using drones, heavy machinery and temporary bridges built with Chinese and Indian support to reach cut-off communities, while nearly 3,500 displaced people in Nepal shelter in 27 sites amid monsoon-driven disease risks. Nepal and the UN have launched a four-month humanitarian appeal to support the response.
