Three men have been jailed for life for killing Gregory Castillo Volquez, who was stabbed 22 times and beaten with a crutch and a nail-embedded plank in Haringey, north London. Benito Ramirez Kones, 20, Carlos Akum Metumbe, 22, and Luiggi Perelli Santana, 22, attacked the 36-year-old out of sight of CCTV as he walked home with friends after a night out drinking, before fleeing the scene and, in two cases, the country. The sentencing judge described the killing as "a truly wicked crime committed by very dangerous men" who had shown no remorse.

The attack took place in a car park in the early hours of 13 January last year, with Mr Volquez pronounced dead at 5.37am after sustaining 22 "sharp force injuries" and being stamped and kicked in the face. Metumbe and Santana, Spanish and Italian nationals respectively, fled to Spain and were extradited last August and October, while Kones, also Spanish, was arrested in Swansea without leaving Britain. Southwark Crown Court heard all three contested the case rather than pleading guilty, and Mr Volquez's mother told the court in a victim impact statement that his death had "changed my life forever".
