Tifo, rollercoaster or both? Osnabruck unveil new display

BBC Sport · 3 hours ago

German second-division side VfL Osnabruck unveiled a striking tifo before their DFB-Pokal first-round tie against Bayern Munich, featuring a working model rollercoaster complete with a moving wooden cart. The display, shown in front of the East Stand at the Bremer Brucke stadium on Wednesday, was intended to symbolise the club's turbulent history, which fans describe as a "rollercoaster ride full of ups and downs." The elaborate display arguably surpassed anything previously seen in German football's rich tifo culture, which already includes Borussia Dortmund's Yellow Wall and Bayern's Allianz Arena showpieces.

The rollercoaster structure was built from wooden slats, plastic piping and fabric over several months, while the cart itself was made from wood and styrofoam and carried dummies along the track using a push-and-pull system. It also featured a "photo station" effect, with a flash triggering an instant image of the cart to appear elsewhere on the stand, and fans recorded a special accompanying song. The tifo, which referenced both past triumphs such as a 1978 win over Bayern and various "scandals and bitter defeats," was removed before kick-off. Osnabruck, recently promoted to Bundesliga 2, then took a shock early lead before ultimately losing 4-1 to holders Bayern Munich, who progressed thanks to two Harry Kane goals plus strikes from Tom Bischof and Michael Olise.
