TikTok explores peer-to-peer payments via DMs, report says

TechCrunch · 2 hours ago

TikTok is reportedly developing a peer-to-peer payments feature that would let users send money to each other directly through direct messages, according to a Bloomberg report. The move would see the video-sharing app expand further into financial services, building on its existing TikTok Pay system and putting it in direct competition with established services such as Venmo and Zelle, as well as X's recently launched X Money.

Evidence of the feature was found in hidden code within the current US iPhone app, suggesting recipients could "tap to accept" payments while senders attach messages, similar to Venmo's format. TikTok told Bloomberg the feature is not currently being tested, indicating it remains in early development, and it is unclear if or when it might launch widely. The company has been broadening beyond social media for some time, adding TikTok Shop, hotel bookings, games and a local discovery map, and earlier this year reportedly applied to Brazil's central bank for approval to offer lending and payment services.

  • Feature found in hidden app code; TikTok says it isn't being tested yet.
  • Would rival Venmo, Zelle and X's new X Money service.
