Justified began as a close adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s short story “Fire in the Hole”, but became stronger once it developed its own storylines and character arcs. The article argues that the FX crime drama’s greatest achievement was expanding its modern Western premise beyond the source material while retaining Leonard’s sharp dialogue, moral ambiguity and Kentucky setting.

The pilot closely follows Leonard’s plot, including Raylan Givens’ confrontation with Boyd Crowder, although the programme updates elements such as the characters’ ages and military backgrounds. Crucially, the writers kept Boyd alive despite his death in the original story, allowing Walton Goggins’ character to become central across all six seasons; later episodes also drew selectively from Leonard novels including Pronto, Riding the Rap and Raylan, while the revival Justified: City Primeval used City Primeval as its basis.
