## Key points

- Chelsea lost 1-0 at Sunderland.
- Alonso has five wins in 10 league games.
- Injuries and 24 line-up changes have unsettled the team.

## Summary

Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland has sharpened questions about Xabi Alonso’s team selection and the side’s lack of a clear identity. Alonso has frequently changed formations and personnel, while Chelsea have struggled to create chances and defend consistently.

Enzo le Fée scored from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after Brian Brobbey won a penalty; Chelsea had earlier been denied one after a VAR review found the contact began outside the area. Chelsea have recorded five wins, four defeats and one draw in Alonso’s first 10 Premier League games, and have made 24 line-up changes this season, more than all but Tottenham. Injuries to key players, including Joao Pedro, Reece James and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, have added to the selection challenges.
