## Key points

- Becerra did not endorse Bass when asked on camera.
- Bass is in a close re-election race against Nithya Raman.
- Spencer Pratt mocked the exchange after sharing the clip.

## Summary

California gubernatorial hopeful Xavier Becerra declined to endorse Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during a television interview, despite standing beside her as the reporter repeatedly asked why voters should support her. The exchange drew attention because Bass is seeking re-election in a close contest against City Councilwoman Nithya Raman, while Becerra and Bass are longtime political allies.

Becerra said he hoped people would vote and described his friendship with Bass, adding that personal relationships can outlast political disagreements. Former mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt shared the clip online and mocked the awkward exchange. Pratt had campaigned against Bass on issues including the wildfires, homelessness, public safety and city services, but lost in the mayoral primary.
