Tokyo’s Sushi Bus combines conveyor belt dining with open-air sightseeing

Engadget · 2 hours ago

A Tokyo start-up is launching the "Sushi Bus", a double-decker vehicle that combines a conveyor-belt sushi restaurant with an open-air city tour. The bus features a kitchen on the lower floor and a dining area with a conveyor belt on the upper floor, with staff using a lift to send freshly prepared sushi up to passengers as they take in the sights, merging two of the city's most popular tourist draws into one experience.

The bus will depart from the Kajibashi Parking Lot near Tokyo Station on a 70-minute circular route likely to pass landmarks including Ginza, Shibuya Scramble Crossing and Asakusa's Kaminarimon gate, though the final route is not yet confirmed. Developed over roughly two and a half years, with particular attention paid to stopping sushi sliding off the conveyor during sudden braking, tours begin on 10 October with a single 20-seat vehicle priced at 16,000 yen (about $101) per person; the operator hopes to expand the concept to Osaka and Kyoto in future.
