Lawless is a crime drama set in rural Virginia during Prohibition, the period from 1920 to 1933 when making and selling alcohol was illegal in the United States. It follows the Bondurant brothers, who make money producing and selling liquor outside the law.
Tom Hardy plays Forrest Bondurant, one of the brothers, alongside Shia LaBeouf and Jason Clarke. Guy Pearce plays a law officer seeking control over the local bootlegging trade, while Jessica Chastain and Dane DeHaan have supporting roles.
The film is based on a novel inspired by the real Bondurant family and was directed by John Hillcoat. Its setting explores how prohibition created illegal businesses and conflicts between bootleggers, police and local officials.
